Samsung has also been changing up its own sub-pixel design in recent months. There are benefits and drawbacks to the way a PenTile screen operates.<br /><br />The classic arrangement of sub-pixels is probably familiar to most users as RGB. One red, green, and blue pixel can be combined to display nearly any color. As display technology marches on, some manufacturers have started altering that set up in order to reduce manufacturing costs and improve some aspects of performance.</span><br />

The Droid Bionic, and other recent Motorola phones have been running qHD (960×540) LCD panels with an RGBW sub-pixel arrangement. These are essentially 2×2 blocks of sub-pixels that contain a red, green, blue, and white pixel element. Under the category of clear benefits is that having that additional white sub-pixel is better for display brightness at no additional power cost.<br /><br />On a RGB screen, the individual pixel elements are lined up from top to bottom (a red is always below and above another red, for instance). This allows for the crisp lines and borders users expect based on screen resolution. With RGBW PenTile, matching sub-pixel elements are lined up diagonally, which gives the screen a strangely cross-hatched or “screen door” pattern under certain conditions. When viewed up close, the offset sub-pixel matrix makes lines look jagged, but at distances of more than about 18-inches, this effect is mostly undetectable.<br /><br />The other common sub-pixel arrangement is RGBG, which is seen in Samsung’s Super AMOLED screens and possibly the just announced Super AMOLED HD. Since AMOLED screens do not have a backlight, there is no reason to have the additional white pixel as in the Motorola screens. In RG-BG, each green pixel shares a red and blue element with another green sub-pixel.<br />

The human eye is most sensitive to green, so these screens, which end up with one-third fewer sub-pixels, retain the same perceived color intensity thanks to all the greens. The same cross-hatch pattern mentioned above is present with a RGBG matrix, but since the green elements are oriented in a vertical stripe, the effect is not as pronounced. Usually, very thin horizontal lines are the most affected by RGBG PenTile. Interestingly, this vertical green sub-pixel column is visible in some instances at the very edge of the screen.<br />
<br />A major reason for the continued use of PenTile is that in increases the yield of screen in the manufacturing process, and also results in thinner panels overrall. Despite this, Samsung has moved away from PenTile for most of its current generation phones, instead producing AMOLEDs with RGB pixels. The cost of manufacturing is higher, but there are none of the odd blurring effects up close.<br /><br />A PenTile matrix does come with drawbacks in the close-up looks department, and we’ve found the “screen door” pattern to be more troublesome with RGBW PenTiles. Motorola has always been very invested in battery life on their devices, so it’s not a surprise that it would go with a more power efficient type of LCD even with these problems. The fact that Samsung seems bent on moving away from PenTile indicates that it isn’t an ideal solution, but sometimes it might be the best we have.

One thing is guaranteed in the mobile industry: The annual release of flagship smartphones. According to a loose-lipped Samsung executive at CES 2014, the Galaxy S5 will arrive in either March or April, and may include an advanced iris scanner (one better than the iPhone’s fingerprint scanner), and a radical redesign.<br />

Samsung has been releasing new variants of its flagship Galaxy S line annually for the last four years, but each time the excitement (and spectacle) seems to get bigger. Last year’s<b> </b><a href="http://technologynews20.blogspot.com/2014/01/samsung-galaxy-s4-emerges-with-many.html">announcement of the Galaxy S4</a> took the form of a huge stage production with actors, choreography, and sets (along with a bit of misogyny thrown in for good measure). The point is, Galaxy S announcements are a huge deal now — Samsung’s flagship is the only <a href="http://technologynews20.blogspot.com/search/label/Mobile%20Phones">Android</a> phone that can, by itself, rival the iPhone in terms of popularity.<br />

Samsung has hung its hat on packing in features to make its phones distinct in the crowded mobile market. According to the Samsung exec with the loose lips, the Korean phone maker is working on iris recognition technology. This would presumably allow you to unlock the phone with your unique eye imprint rather than a PIN or your face. Samsung might be trying to one-up Apple, which just added a fingerprint scanner to the iPhone 5S. There is no guarantee the tech will be ready for the GS5, though.<br />

For iris scanning to be feasible, the device would need a super-high resolution front-facing camera. Lending credence to this approach is the existence of Samsung’s Smart Stay feature, which uses the camera to tell if your eyes are open and looking at the screen. So you could maybe take some really nice selfies too.<br />

That’s why most commercially deployed iris scanners use near-infrared light with a wavelength of 700-900nm. It’s possible Samsung could go this route — the Galaxy S4 and Note 3 already include infrared sensors that are used for head tracking. A more powerful sensor in the Galaxy S5 might — maybe — be able to do iris scanning.<br /><br />The thing to remember about Samsung’s feature packed software is that some of it just won’t work right. Many of the “Smart” features introduced in the GS4 only worked enough to be profoundly annoying. If head-tracking features like Smart Scroll and Smart Rotate only work when they feel like it, what are the odds iris scanning is going to be a good experience out of the gate. Don’t get your hopes up on this one.</span><br />

According to the CES tease, Samsung is also planning a more radical redesign for the GS5. The <a href="http://www.extremetech.com/tag/galaxy-s4">Galaxy S4</a> was a little on the boring side because it looked very similar to the Galaxy S3. This time the company is apparently looking to improve the display and the feel of the casing. Samsung is famous for using slippery, unpleasant plastic, so maybe it’s finally looking into a more premium material. As for the screen, a 5.25-inch 2560×1440 AMOLED has been rumored. That would be about 560 pixels per inch, over 100 more than the Galaxy S4 and 200 more than the iPhone 5S. PenTile doesn’t really matter at that point.<br />

Alongside the Galaxy S5, Samsung is expected to announce a new version of the Galaxy Gear smartwatch with a sleeker design. By all accounts, uptake of Samsung’s $300 wrist computer has been poor. It has only been a few months since that device was released, so perhaps a do-over signals a change in direction — maybe even a reasonable price. Keep an eye out for Samsung to send out invites to an Unpacked event in March or April.<br />

At tonight’s Unpacked event in New York City, Samsung announced its next flasgship phone:<b> </b>The Samsung Galaxy S4. Despite the awkward and tone-deaf presentation, the phone itself seems pretty neat. The screen is huge. It’s a 5-inch monster with a 1920×1080 resolution. Using Super AMOLED display, the S4 sports an impressive pixel density of 441 pixels per inch (PPI). In comparison, the 4-inch iPhone screen has a resolution of 1136×640 at 326 PPI. Being so large, you’d think it’d be a lot heavier than an iPhone, but it’s surprisingly close. The S4 is only 130 grams, and the iPhone 5 weighs 18 grams lighter. It’s no slouch in regard to slimness either. It’s 7.9 mm thick compared to the iPhone’s 7.6 mm depth. <br />

The S4 will have 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM across the board, but it comes in three available models varying in storage space. 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models will be available for purchase, but keep in mind that storage can be expanded by up to 64GB with a microSD card. It also comes in two different colors: Black Mist and White Frost, so the number of models jumps up to six total. Depending on the market, it will either sport a 1.9Ghz quad-core processor or a 1.6Ghz eight-core processor.<br />

The rear camera can shoot 13 megapixel photos, and features back-illuminated sensor to improve image quality. Samsung boasts about absolutely no shutter lag, but we’ll see about that when we get the hardware in our hands. The forward-facing camera reaches a maximum of 2 megapixels, but it has the same back-illuminated sensor and lack of shutter lag that the rear camera possesses.<br />

The S4 is lousy with radios. It will support GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSPA+, and Cat 3 LTE with a peak download of 100Mbps. The 2G and 3G radios each support four different bands, but the LTE radio will vary depending on the market. As far as WiFi goes, the 802.11 A, B, G, and N support is there. Interestingly, Samsung is officially jumping aboard the 802.11 AC train as well. The standard isn’t ratified yet, so we’re stuck with a draft version. GPS, GLONASS, Bluetooth 4.0, and NFC are all aboard as well. Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) 2.0 and an IR LED are packed in there, but there’s still no word on the kitchen sink being thrown in as well.<br />

This super phone will ship with <a href="http://technologynews20.blogspot.com/search/label/Mobile%20Phones">Android</a> 4.2.2 Jelly Bean on it, so you can expect all of your standard features there. Samsung can’t help itself, so it is including some unique features as well. S Voice Drive switches the S4 into driving mode when connected to a car’s Bluetooth system. Samsung Optical Reader performs optical character recognition (OCR) and QR code deciphering for you out of the box. Samsung WatchON lets you put that IR LED to good use as a controller for TVs and other set-top boxes. S Translator will even convert text and audio to different languages. All of this sounds really great, but the proof is in the pudding. After Apple sort of whiffed with Siri, skepticism is in full effect.<br />

Samsung really took its time selling us on the dual camera functionality. When you’re recording a video or taking a picture with the S4, you can insert the image from the forward facing camera directly on the image from the rear facing camera. That’s neat, but it seems like Samsung is making a big deal over a pretty simple feature. Air View allows content preview just by hovering your finger over an email, video, or image — much like Quick Look on OS X. Air Gesture, on the other hand, allows you to change a music track, scroll a website, or answer the phone with the wave of a hand. Weird, right? Why not just tap? Samsung Adapt Sound keeps the sound level at the proper level, and the Samsung Adapt Display provides the best viewing experience based on the type of application. Hopefully they all work as advertised.<br />
<br />
There are just too many features to even mention. As ridiculous as the presentation was, the feature set might be even crazier. Both software and hardware bullet lists seem never-ending. Accelerometer, RGB light, geomagnetic, proximity, gyro, barometer, temperature, humidity, and gesture sensors are all included in the S4. I mean, a humidity sensor? Yikes, that’s a lot of hardware in that tiny casing. Will anyone actually want to use these, though?<br />
<br />
The Samsung Galaxy S4 will launch at the end of April in over 100 markets. It features a 2600 mAh removable battery, but no specific battery life estimates. Pricing, at least for now, remains a mystery. We’ll know more as we near release, but we’re left guessing for now.

Your less tech savvy friends may not have heard of the Rift yet — and it doesn’t exactly have an impressive catalog of officially supported software — but the buzz surrounding the device is strong and loud. In fact, that buzz is so strong and loud that Sony has taken to developing a Rift competitor of its own.<br /><br />Sony’s headset, the HMZ-T3Q, is actually the newest iteration in a line of theater virtualization headsets. Last year, Sony offered the HMZ-T3W headset at $1,000 per unit. Both units have similar specs and capabilities — personal headsets that simulate watching a screen that measures 700 to 750 inches in size from around 65 feet away. With the previous model, <a href="http://technologynews20.blogspot.com/search/label/Mobile%20Phones">Sony</a> aimed for the market of customers that would like a theater-sized experience when watching media, but didn’t have theater-sized space to set up the appropriate hardware. The headset allows you to have that giant screen and crisp 7.1 surround sound sitting on your face, so you can conceivably live in a tiny New York City-style shoe box of a room, but not miss out on an extravagant in-home media experience. The new model shown at <a href="http://technologynews20.blogspot.com/search/label/Mobile%20Phones">CES 2014</a> this week takes somewhat of an aim at the Oculus Rift, as Sony touted the head-tracking capabilities of the HMZ-T3Q, and noted that it’s not only compatible with movies and TV, but video games as well.<br />

Being “compatible” with video games, though, doesn’t mean you can just plug it in and suddenly have a seamless experience. The Oculus Rift — a similar VR headset, but made specifically for video games — works, but barely. Games need to be made compatible with VR headsets just as much as the VR hardware needs to be made compatible with games. Team Fortress 2 has “full” Oculus Rift support, and while you can use your head and the Rift to look around in-game, you’re still stuck facing forward — limited by the maneuverability of your head and neck — because that’s where the keyboard and mouse are located. Try spinning 180 degrees quickly enough to neutralize a would-be in-game assassin while your hands are firmly planted on the keyboard and mouse in front of you — even years of yoga won’t help.<br />

So far, the best bet for a VR headset like the Rift to work well with gaming would be to pair it with something like an omnidirectional treadmill. The less immersive setup would be sitting in a chair that can spin 360 degrees, having enough space around the chair so you won’t bump into anything, and using a wireless gamepad. If Sony’s HMZ-T3Q truly was as compatible with games as the Rift, then it would still suffer from the same immersion factor. However, hardware like this is very promising. Even though playing a twitch-based game with the current Rift will greatly reduce your chance of success, the device works. A slow, exploratory game like Dear Esther or Gone Home would do the device justice.<br /><br />The price of Sony’s headset is currently undisclosed, but the last model was a thousand bucks, significantly more expensive than the $300 Rift. Despite Sony’s claims, it remains to be seen if the headset is truly as compatible with games as the Rift — and even if so, if the price of the new model is anything like the last model, it’s a tough sell. If there’s anything the HMZ-T3W does have on the Rift, though, is that it looks like a virtual reality headset, unlike the Rift’s box-on-your-face aesthetic.<br />

<br />Intel has developed its own digital assistant and has shown it off at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.<br /><br />The company unveiled Jarvis – its digital assistant – on stage during its keynote for the trade show in Las Vegas.<br /><br />Jarvis is a Bluetooth headset that wraps around the back of the users ears; a bit like a bulky hearing aid.<br /><br />Intel demonstrated some of its features during the keynote. By pairing it with an Android smartphone app, users can remotely interact and control the phone.<br /><br />Examples of features include being able to ask for directions, look up restaurants and so on. If it sounds like what you can do now with Apple’s Siri and Google Now, that’s because it is pretty much the same.<br /><br />However, don’t expect to get your hands on Jarvis any time soon. Intel has said that it is just a reference design for the time being.<br /><br />It would be up to Intel’s manufacturing partners to take the design and turn it into an actual product.<br /><br />The device is part of what Intel’s chief executive Brian Krzanich called the company’s push to “make everything smart”.<br /><br />The company also showed off a number of other reference designs that fit in with that goal. They include a pair of smart earbuds that can track a wearer’s run and a bowl that can wirelessly charge gadgets placed in it.

LAS VEGAS -- Intel says it wants to make science fiction into reality. More specifically, it wants to make the way we interact with computers and tablets more human, more "natural."<br />

"We want to communicate with the computing device naturally, as you would with another human," Mooly Eden, Intel's senior vice and perceptual computing general manager, said today during a press conference here at the International Consumer Electronics Show. Think of it, he said, as adding senses to the computer brain.<br />

Enter "RealSense," Intel's new technology that spans devices and attempts to bring immersive, human interaction to devices. It was announced today. <br />
At CES, Intel demonstrates its new RealSense 3-D camera.<br />
<br />
The technology will appear in various types of devices -- <a href="http://technologynews20.blogspot.com/search/label/Laptops">laptops</a> and <a href="http://technologynews20.blogspot.com/search/label/Mobile%20Phones">tablets</a>, for example -- from hardware partners like Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo, among others. Intel outlined two new ways RealSense will initially take shape: a RealSense 3-D camera and a natural language personal assistant.<br />
<br />
The 3-D camera features a depth sensor and a can detect specific gesture movements from a user's hands and fingers, as well as a person's facial features and movements. With the camera, a person can use a device with any number of "natural" gestures instead of, say, typing or using a mouse. It can be used for gaming, enhanced learning and to capture and share 3-D images.<br />
<br />
The camera can also be used for video conferencing or video blogging. For example, Intel has partnered with Microsoft to enhance Skype video conferencing, enabling users to change or remove a person's background during a video call and add video and other images in real-time. These features might also be useful for content creators who produce videos for YouTube or perhaps a company blog.<br />

One might think of the camera as enhancing the devices sense of sight, Intel says.<br />
<br />
To advance a computer's sense of hearing, Intel collaborated with Burlington, Mass.-based Nuance Communications, maker of the Dragon voice assistant, to develop a smart, new personal assistant.<br />

Intel says the new personal assistant operates conversationally. "People can simply tell it to play music, get answers, connect with friends and find content -- all by using natural language," the company says.<br />

Imagine trying to patent the smartphone, or for that matter, the tattoo. Any company that could swing that, could probably also patent the fork and knife. Incredibly, a new application from Google-owned Motorola Mobility seeks a patent not for any particular utensil, but rather, for setting the table. In other words, if you have an electronic smart tattoo, and want it to speak to your mobile communications device, you may soon be able to do it in spades, but you will have to do it Google style.<br /><br />But hold on for a minute, as there is a bit more to the whole concept than might first appear. The tattoo they have in mind is actually one that will be emblazoned over your vocal cords to intercept subtle voice commands — perhaps even sub vocal commands, or even the fully internal whisperings that fail to pluck the vocal cords when not given full cerebral approval. One might even conclude that they are not just patenting device communications from a patch of smart skin, but communications from your soul.<br /><div>

Or maybe not. It has been known for decades that when you speak to yourself in your inner voice, your brain still sends neural spike volleys to your vocal apparatus, in a similar fashion to when you actually speak aloud. The main difference between the two, is that the nervous action driving covert speech as it is called, is sub threshold, and does not generate the full muscle contraction. The same might also be said for imagining throwing a baseball — it is probably not possible to even do so without simultaneously calling up and at least partially launching unamplified motor programs. Stated another way, your thoughts are your motor intentions, only they are not always recognizable as such if they are sufficiently abstracted.<br /><br />The actual patent speaks of picking up an “auditory signal” from the tattoo, and converting it into a digital signal. The signals from the brain, carried by spikes on the hundreds of laryngeal nerve fibers (and other nerves modulating the vocal tract), are already digital. They bear no real resemblance to an auditory signal at this point. After transformation in the numerous muscles that control the speech organs, there is still no single signal that could be sent to a transducer to generate sound recognizable as speech. Looking at an image of a smart tattoo pioneered by John Roger’s Illinois-based research lab, there seems to be all kinds of sensor goodies which can be built in to pick up various biologics. I don’t know if the strain gauges could pick up an actual speech signal in the same way that a conventional microphone could, but they would certainly generate useful information. The built-in EMG and ECG electrodes would not pick up individual spikes so to speak, but could certainly generate electrical records of muscle activity, and perhaps eventually compound nerve potentials. Rogers helped to form a company, MC10, that hoped to commercialize this technology, and although he indicated that he was not involved in these recent ventures, they have joint development efforts with Motorola Mobility.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

There is already a device known as a throat microphone that has been used to record an auditory signal in noisy conditions like, for example, the cockpit of a jet fighter. Developed along with the first pressure suit back in 1934, it used a direct contact microphone to pick up sound waves travelling through solid objects such as the throat wall. Later so-called throat microphones, such as the Xbox 360 accessory, only use an open-air microphone. They do not really exclude background noise, nor have the ability to pick up unvoiced signals. What got some folks attention recently, namely those over at Patently Apple, was a few peculiar statements in the patent regarding the recording of galvanic skin responses. These guys first heard about the e-skin tattoo from Regina Dugan, the former DARPA head who is now in charge of advanced research at Motorola. Their article notes that the e-tattoo would provide a nice way to do authentication, but the seemingly out of place inclusion of the lie detection talk certainly raises some questions.</div>

<br />Covert voice activation of your device in a crowd would definitely be a nice feature. Instead of actually speaking to Siri or Google Now, you could merely think your voice command. Detecting stress and other emotion could have some applicability too, although who else really needs to know if you have a lump in your throat? Perhaps I have not read that many patents recently, but there certainly did seem to be an excess of wording, and scope. Every wireless communications protocol I am familiar with was included in some form, somewhere. Not only were there definitions for words like “a” and “an,” but also actual percentages associated with a list of words like “about,” “approximately”, “essentially”, and “substantially”. Clearly this is one among several recent patents that we all may want to keep an eye on.</div>

At CES last night both Intel and AMD confirmed that they’ll support dual-mode tablets going forward. The idea from both companies is that consumers will be able to buy a Windows tablet running Android. The two companies are pursuing this goal in somewhat different ways; AMD is publicly allying with BlueStacks (again) to offer an emulation environment for Android apps, while Intel is apparently offering native x86 execution for Android in both environments.<br /><br /><div>
<b>Parsing the differences</b></div>

Further muddling the matter is the fact that BlueStacks has made statements implying that because the AMD APU contains an embedded ARM controller, AMD chips could outperform their Intel counterparts. Here, we need to set the record straight a bit. The only embedded ARM core we’re aware of on any shipping AMD product to date, including Kaveri, is a Cortex-A5 “Security Processor” that the company expects to ship in upcoming tablet designs in 2014. The entire Trustzone concept was designed to provide a low-power security processor. It’s worlds away from a high-end integrated ARM core, and even if it wasn’t, there’s only one of them baked into next-gen APUs.</div>

A single Cortex-A5 isn’t going to give AMD some overwhelming performance advantage given that Android can already run natively on x86 to start with. Intel and AMD are chasing two different visions here — Intel claims you’ll be able to switch between different operating systems at the touch of a button, while AMD is talking up the ability to launch apps from the Windows 8.1 desktop or Start Screen. Intel, in other words, is talking up the option of having Android as a discrete operating environment (presumably virtualized within Windows). AMD is talking about an enhanced option to run Android applications from within Windows.<br /><br /><b>Is the mass market going to care?</b><br />The ability to run Android applications from within or alongside Windows is an obvious benefit to anyone who already finds themselves juggling multiple devices. That mostly means developers and IT personnel, and it’s not a large group of people in absolute terms. Outside of the tech community, most people buy devices based on what they’re familiar with and what applications the product can already run. Windows 8 has struggled to find a footing for itself precisely because Metro mucked with much of what people expected from a PC, while the App Store has failed to deliver application-level parity with its Android or iOS counterparts. Windows 8 already presents two user environments (poorly); tossing Android in as a third seems ill-advised.<br /><br />The AMD-BlueStacks approach of emulating applications rather than launching the full operating system is an easier way to offer the advantage of Android compatibility without the drawbacks, but it comes with its own set of challenges. AMD’s share of the touchscreen-equipped market is limited and Android applications are themselves built to different UI specifications than their Windows counterparts. Most are touch-centric, and the keyboard-and-mouse are an imperfect substitute (despite all of Microsoft’s claims to the contrary).<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />The only way for Intel or AMD to really pull this concept off is to offer a definitive best-in-class experience that can match anything an Android-only product can produce. Apple’s share of the computer market rose after it began using Intel chips partly because the machines themselves were more competitive, but also because — thanks to Boot Camp — Apple products were competitive with Windows PCs when running the Windows operating system. It’s not enough to offer a middling level of compatibility — any system with multi-OS capability has to compete equally across both environments.<br /><br />If Intel is virtualizing Android within Windows, it’s going to have trouble putting a perfect polish on the experience without sacrificing battery life or execution speed. AMD’s approach may make more sense for users who only care about a handful of games or similar utilities, but AMD is ultimately dependent on a third-party’s software framework and product support. The ARM core integrated in upcoming APUs may be of some limited assistance, but it’s not going to fundamentally change the performance game. Nothing short of an embedded ARM block would make that happen, and at that point, you might as well just reboot into Android natively.<br /><br />Google and Microsoft aren’t backing this endeavor, but I’m not sure their support would materially alter the outcome. Dual OS may have a compelling use case for some, but it’s unlikely to find more than niche acceptance. Most Android users already own other Windows devices, while most Windows owners bought into the Windows tablet ecosystem precisely because they needed Microsoft’s feature set. A few cross-platform apps offered by emulation may be icing on the cake, but not much more.</div>

Let’s start with the thermal imaging case, because let’s face it: Who doesn’t love thermal imaging? Created by FLIR Systems, the FLIR One is the first consumer-oriented thermal imaging system for a smartphone. It comes in the form of a smartphone case that fits either the iPhone 5 or 5S, with a planned release date of spring 2014 and target price of “under $350.” Cases that fit certain Android phones (presumably the Galaxy S4) will arrive later in 2014. The FLIR One contains a normal camera, an infrared camera (thermal energy is mostly emitted as infrared), and a battery pack at the bottom. It looks like it attaches to he iPhone via the Lightning Bolt connector.</div>

In practice, output from the FLIR (forward-looking infrared) One looks exactly like the thermal imaging cameras that you might’ve seen on the TV. In theory, you could use the FLIR One to see in the dark, check the quality of your home’s insulation, to play a killer game of hide-and-seek, or to navigate burning smoke-filled house (infrared can penetrate smoke, unlike visible light). The FLIR One website says you can use it to detect wet areas and leaks before mold develops — or perhaps to spy on animals (or humans?) outside as they move around under the cover of darkness. If the FLIR One lets you spot thieves and ne’er-do-wells from a distance, the Yellow Jacket stun gun case is what you want for close-quarters combat. Priced at $100, and again just for the iPhone 4/4S/5/5S, the Yellow Jacket is essentially a large case with a built-in battery and two electrodes at the top. When you push a button, 650,000 volts flow across the electrodes, creating a weapon. Apparently the electrodes are sharp enough to penetrate clothing.</div>

If you watch some video reviews, though, it’s clear that the Yellow Jacket is more of deterrent than a disabler; the voltage is enough to sting, but it won’t knock an assailant down like a real taser or stun gun. As a nice aside, though, when you’re not using the Yellow Jacket to shock people, the extra battery doubles up as a reserve battery, doubling your iPhone’s battery life. It sounds like a Galaxy S4 version is planned, but no release date is given.</div>

One of the most exciting applications made possible by smartphones is the tricorder — a portable device (from the Star Trek universe) that’s got so many sensors that it can measure/detect just about anything: Gas leaks, electrical faults, atmospheric pressure, whether someone is lying, cancer, etc. Basically, with enough sensors and software, there’s no reason your smartphone can’t become a tricorder.</div>

Obviously, creating a universal tricorder would be an expensive endeavor, but Scanadu is getting the ball rolling with a specialized medical tricorder. Called the Scout (pictured above), you hold it up to your head, whereupon its sensors can measure your heart rate, respiratory rate, blood-oxygen levels, skin and core temperature, and other important metrics. The Scout has no screen of its own, instead beaming data to a smartphone app. The general idea is that you would use the Scout on a regular basis, allowing the app to track your general health and to alert you if it appears that something might be wrong. As usual, CES 2014 is also home to the usual selection of audiovisual and battery life add-ons. For discerning phone photographers, Izzi showed off its Orbit Pro case for the iPhone 5 and 5S, which allows you to position four different lenses in front of your standard iPhone camera, allowing for macro, fisheye, telescopic, and wide-angle photography. Beyerdynamic, on the other hand, is catering to audiophiles with its A200p amplifier, which plugs into the USB or Lightning Bolt connector on your phone and hijacks the audio signal — a bit like the USB audio breakout boxes that have been common on the PC for years. Priced at $300, the A200p is definitely for audiophiles — or perhaps for emergency DJ work.<br />

Sony Ericsson officially announced the arrival of Sony Ericsson Live, smartphone walkman Gingerbread based Android operating system. By wearing the label 'Walkman', the handset is claimed superior in the music sector.<br />

Sony Ericsson Live has a 3.2 inch HVGA landscape display with a resolution of 480 x 320. Magnitude 1 GHz processor and resolution 5-megapixel camera sector. Users also are able to record 720p high definition video.<br />

The handset has a special button for accessing the music player walkman. Music sector is given special attention. For example, by the presence of Sony's technology to add clarity xLOUD audio output.<br />

There's also a TrackID feature to keep track of the song. Sony Ericsson Live also provides access to the service of music and video content on Sony's Qriocity. However, the service is not available in all areas.<br />
