Australian researchers have announced a significant breakthrough in restoring some form of sight to blind patients such as spots of black and white light.<br /><br />Dianne Ashworth, who has severe vision loss due to the inherited condition retinitis pigmentosa, has been fitted with a prototype bionic eye.<br /><br />The device was designed, built and tested by scientists as the Australian Bionics Institute.<br /><br />"It was really funny when it switched (on)," Ashworth said. "I didn't know what to expect and I don't know if anyone did know what I was going to see and then all of a sudden I went 'yep' I could see a little flash," she added. "When the first bigger image came I just went 'wow,' because I just didn't expect it at all but it was amazing."<br /><br />The bionic eye is equipped with 24 electrodes with a small lead wire that extends from the back of the eye to a receptor attached behind her ear.<br /><br />Artificial retinas require surgery to implant electrodes deep into the eye, stimulating cells that transmit information to the brain. The device restores mild vision, where patients are able to pick up major contrasts and edges such as light and dark objects.<br /><br />Researchers hope to develop the prototype so blind patients can achieve independent mobility.<br /><br />Dr Lauren Ayton, from the Centre for Eye Research Australia said: "With the prototype the idea is to stimulate the retina to give little spots of light, which are called phosphenes, and so, with her implant, Di will be able to see a number of spots in different locations and will be able to see things like shapes and the edges of doorways and objects like that eventually."<br /><br />Two more volunteers have now undergone the four and a half hour operation and are waiting for their devices to be switched on.</div>

The first bionic hand that allows an amputee to feel what they are touching will be transplanted later this year in a pioneering operation that could introduce a new generation of artificial limbs with sensory perception.<br /><br />The patient is an unnamed man in his 20s living in Rome who lost the lower part of his arm following an accident, said Silvestro Micera of the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland.<br /><br />The wiring of his new bionic hand will be connected to the patient’s nervous system with the hope that the man will be able to control the movements of the hand as well as receiving touch signals from the hand’s skin sensors.<br /><br />Dr Micera said that the hand will be attached directly to the patient’s nervous system via electrodes clipped onto two of the arm’s main nerves, the median and the ulnar nerves.<br /><br />This should allow the man to control the hand by his thoughts, as well as receiving sensory signals to his brain from the hand’s sensors. It will effectively provide a fast, bidirectional flow of information between the man’s nervous system and the prosthetic hand.<br /><br />“This is real progress, real hope for amputees. It will be the first prosthetic that will provide real-time sensory feedback for grasping,” Dr Micera said.<br /><br />“It is clear that the more sensory feeling an amputee has, the more likely you will get full acceptance of that limb,” he told the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Boston.<br /><br />“We could be on the cusp of providing new and more effective clinical solutions to amputees in the next year,” he said.

This work of science-fiction is now a reality as a company called Leia Display Systems (named after the Star Wars character, Princess Leia), pioneers the first ever system which lets users talk to 3-D images of their loved ones. So far the company has successfully built interactive 3D hologram machines, but it plans on having a working model of the entire telephone operating system by next year and plans to have it available in the market within five years. The idea for the concept came from the effect produced when laser lights at a night club hit dry ice.<br />

The working of the holographic telephone system is pretty simple. The person will sit in front of a special camera with two lenses and a microphone. The images from the two lenses will be used to produce the 3-D effect of the hologram and sent to the receiving end via the Internet. The image will be received by a hologram machine that will project it on to a water vapor screen which will provide the third dimension of the image. The image will talk, listen and move in real time and allow people to talk as if they are in the same room.<div>

The Soccket is a football which converts the kinetic energy from kicks into electrical energy and stores it so that it can be used at a later time. This energy can be used to power lights and small appliances via a USB port. The football uses the firms patented G-Kick Technology which uses a pendulum inside the ball that swings every time the ball is kicked, consequently running a generator connected to a rechargeable battery. According to the company, kicking the ball for half an hour will provide three hours of electricity, which can even be used to charge a smartphone via the USB port.</div>

The Soccket project was originally a Kickstarter campaign that achieved $92,296 from an original goal of $75,000. The Soccket football costs $99 and is available on Uncharted Play’s website. The ball is made from foam and leather and never needs to be inflated. Th firm has tested the ball in poor communities in Mexico, Brazil, South Africa and says that it is ideal for areas with basic electrical networks. The company also claims that the ball is sturdy and can be kicked around without damaging the insides.</div>

Artificial bone printing has also been made possible by experts at MIT. It is made of collagen protein, elastic in nature and hydroxyapatite minerals that give it the strength thus is making it flexible for movement, yet 22 times as strong as its constituent materials. The components are so well blended that they are perfect to support heavy loads.<br /><br />This research has been carried out by Markus Buehler MIT civil engineering professor and his team. He has been working on 3D printing techniques for quite some time and has worked with various polymers, synthetic materials, etc., and the geometric patterns are also inspired from the naturally occurring materials like real bones or nacre with some additions to the design. His work has been published in Advance Functional Materials.<br />

What came out from the research, were three materials; first simulated mineral calcite, second replicated nacre and third a composite design that was assembled to enhance the human bone structure.<br /><br />After the new bone was created out of the new materials, multiple trials and tests were carried out on it to check  its strength. We all remember the Frankenstein; a man put together by a mad scientist by sewing dead human organs together. The idea was a fantasy only until now. Although the scientist we are talking about is not mad and is not planning to ‘sew’ human parts together. Meet Dr. Sergio Canavero, Italian Neuro Scientists, of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group. He believes that with the way technological advancement is progressing we will soon be able to transplant heads. Transplantation of a human head from another body has been up for debate for quite some time now. So far the problem has been to how to connect a head with another body’s spinal cord? Seems simple enough in writing but this is the hardest part actually. However, Dr. Canavero has rested his faith in a recent creation known as fusogens. He believes that with the invention of Fusogens, plastic membranes which have been created to repair severed nerves, the process of transplanting a head is possible. Fusogens allow the transmission of nerve impulses to the donor nervous system.<br />

Dr. Canavero believes that a transplantation of head will be possible in a few years and he has already devised the procedure. Back in 2008 he used electrical stimulation to wake up a patient who was in a coma for two whole years. His theories are based on those of Robert White. Robert White is the neurosurgeon who transplanted a monkey’s head back in 70’s. <br />

The procedure will require two bodies; donor and the recipient. These bodies will be chilled to a certain temperature. Afterwards, two surgeons will cut the spinal cords simultaneously of both bodies and the donated head would be immediately placed on recipient’s body and by employing fusogens will be attached to the spinal cord. Although this might bring up some ethical concerns and many debates, but one thing is for sure that this idea/procedure will be a breakthrough for the medical science. Meet Ivan Owen, a person who made his living by creation of mechanical puppetry. This was the particular skill set that Richard required for his endeavors. Richard’s decision to fight back has changed a lot of lives and persons’ perspective about life. Richard says he had his mind made up about building new hands even before he left the Operation Theatre. These two partners, living miles apart, started working on the project. It was hard because of the fact that Ivan lived in Seattle while Richard lived in South Africa. Coming up with a prototype this way was turning into a nightmare when came the help; MakerBot. The use of videoconferencing and cloud computing had its perks. But it was hard to prototype a device for someone who lives so far off. We have talked so much about 3D printers and what wonders they are doing for the world of science. MakerBot is a New York based 3D printing company which helped this quest by providing the companions with two new MakerBot 3D printers. This proved to be the crucial thing since it became a walk in the park to come up with a prototype which could be tested right away. The quest ended successfully and without much delay once the partners had access to these 3D printers and that’s when it clicked Richard that this research could very well be used by others and in providing prosthetic hands to the deserving.<br />

However, a discovery in human anatomy is something we weren’t expecting to take place but it did! <br /><br />He found a new layer present in the human cornea and has named it after him; Dua’s layer. This particular layer lies at the back of the cornea, the same cornea which was believed to have only five layers previously. The methodology in finding out this layer included Dua injecting air into the cornea and making use of an electron microscope to completely analyze each layer by scanning it. The eyes used for this research were, of course, the ones that had been donated for such research purposes. How many of you have heard about corneal hydrops? It is this disorder which allows for the building up of fluid in the cornea. The research team believes that a tear in Dua’s layer is the cause for this disorder.<br />

We are today talking about a special pair of glasses which will make the process mentioned above seem like a piece of cake. Say hello to Evena Medical’s Eyes-On Glasses which are capable of implementing the mentioned idea and turning it into a reality. These glasses actually enable the user to see a patient’s veins in real-time through their skin without any side effects for the patient or the user of the glasses.<br /><br />The best part is that unlike other glasses out there which include 3D glasses and smart glasses, these medical glasses can be worn while you have your regular glasses on. The principle working idea is to make use of ‘multi-spectral 3D imaging’ to pop up veins when being viewed using the medical glasses. The glasses come with dual cameras, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G, two speakers which are built in and a separate microprocessor which is worn on a belt.<div>

The user of the medical glasses sees the skin of the patient as it really is but the camera’s image is processed and overlaid on top to portray the veins and it seems as if the veins are also visible. The images can be stored on the glasses for future reference and the glasses make it possible to relay the information to remotely located medical staff.<br /><br />These glasses are expected to be made available by the first quarter of the next year and we are hoping that they would prove to be great success in hospitals.

While the focus is on printing of organs, a team of researchers is working on printing skins. Under the leadership of Dr. Sophie Wuerger at University of Liverpool, U.K., this team is working towards making it possible to print skin which matches the skin of the individual patient. The idea is to come up with a way of 3D printing skin which is natural looking and blends in with the natural skin of the patient. The research is quite challenging since each individual skin has particular characteristics and vary from person to person.<div>

The team has come up with a brilliant methodology for this process. They will use a 3D scanning camera, currently being developed by the same team, to create 3D images of the patient’s natural in different light levels. In the next step this information will be fed to the printer which will enable it to print skin which exactly matches the patient’s skin. Dr. Sophie has high hopes for this project.<div>

<b>                  From left: Steve Stice, Jennifer Mumaw, Erin Jordan and John Peroni, the team                                                                   developing the “fracture putty”</b><br />This new fracture healing putty shortens the bone healing time from months to a mere weeks with the inflicted person being able to get up and move about in a matter of days. The researchers have used adult stem cells since they produce an enzyme which helps in bone formation. The putty was tested on lab rats during its initial stages of development. The rats were injected in fracture sites and a stabilizing device was used to hold the bone in place. The rats showed signs of full recovery within two weeks.<br /><br />The main objective of the fracture putty is to help soldiers who are more likely to get bones fractured and become mentally affected by the days spent in a hospital bed. The putty was developed for testing on large animals and then transferred to the US Department of Defense to make it suitable for human use.<br /><br />The fracture putty is only one of the possible methods being researched by scientists to accelerate the bone healing process. Some include completely replacing the broken bone while others are similar to the putty, but use different materials to heal the bone. The diagram below shows the University of Texas’s attempt at healing bones using a putty based on silicone polymers.</div>

Imagine if on your next doctors visit, instead of going through all the examinations, your doctor simply handed you a pill and sent you on your way. But that’s the whole catch to it. They may look like normal pills, kind of like a daily vitamin pill. But they are in fact ingestible computers, which travel your system and report back data. It sounds like something straight out of science fiction, but is it really that far off?<div>

Even though, society still has its apprehensions regarding the privacy implications of wearable computers like Google Glass, scientists, researchers and some start-ups are already on their way to introduce to the world, an even more invasive wave of computing which just might be the next big thing in medical technology that is to say, ingestible computers and minuscule sensors stuffed inside pills. Although these tiny gadgets are not mainstream yet, people are already volunteering to test them by swallowing them in order to monitor a range of health data and wirelessly share this information with their doctor. To make things even more state of the art, efforts are under-way on prototypes of tiny, ingestible devices that can do things like automatically open car doors or fill in passwords.<br />

For people associated with hi-tech professions, especially astronauts, these pills have been in use for quite some time. But the bigger picture is to have the public see, what new doors this device unravels. And you never know, maybe in about a year or two, your family doctor could also have them in his medicinal kit. These pills are in fact tiny robots equipped with micro sensors and transmitters, disguised to look like ordinary pills. You swallow them with water, or milk or whatever you prefer, just like normal pills. The rest is for the device to do. The pills work their way to the stomach and stay intact as they travel through the intestinal tract.<br /><br />Referring to this new medical breakthrough, E. Schmidt, the executive chairman of Google said that even though it may seem like you’re taking an ordinary pill but you’ll in fact be swallowing a microscopic robot which will monitor your systems and wirelessly transmit all that happens inside your body. He added that if it makes the difference between health and death, we’re all going to want this thing.<br /><br />One of the versions of these pills, made by Proteus Digital Health, a small company in Redwood City, California, does not even need a battery source but uses instead, the human body as an energy source. We’ve all done that potato powered light bulb experiment in school. This is more or less the same thing.  Proteus has added magnesium and copper on each side of its tiny sensor, which generates just enough electricity from stomach acids. The pill contains a sensor that interacts with stomach fluid, as it settles to the bottom of the stomach and sends a signal to a patch worn on the torso. The patch transmits information about the type of pill and when it was ingested to a nearby smartphone, along with physiological data, including heart rate and activity level, medication-taking behaviours and monitor how a patient’s body responds to a specific medicine. It can even detect the person’s movements and rest patterns.</div>

<br /><br />Executives at the company, which recently raised $62.5 million from investors, say they believe that these pills will help patients with physical and neurological problems. People with heart failure-related issues could keep a check on their blood flow and body temperature while those with central nervous system problems, such schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease, could take these pills to monitor vital signs in real time, The Proteus pill has been approved by The Food and Drug Administration last year.<br /><br />A pill known as the CorTemp Ingestible Core Body Temperature Sensor, made by HQ Inc. in Palmetto, Florida., has a been designed to have built-in battery and thus wirelessly transmits information regarding body temperature as it travels through a patient.<br /><br />The device has been used by Firefighters, football players, soldiers and astronauts to enable their employers to monitor their body temperatures for safety and health purposes. CorTemp was inaugurated in 2006 as a research collaboration from the Johns Hopkins University, Applied Physics Laboratory and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.<br /><br />According to marketing director Lee Carbonelli, HQ’s, the company hoped, in the coming year, to develop a consumer version of this gadget that would wirelessly communicate to a smartphone app.<div>

As we’ve repeatedly mentioned in our posts, medical science has benefited the most from the advancement in science and technology. How many of you remember Zac Vawter who managed to climb the stairs of the Willis Tower in Chicago. What was truly remarkable about this endeavor was the fact that Vawter was wearing a prosthetic leg and could actually control this prosthesis just like his real leg. The commands from brain are interpreted by EMG sensors and acted upon by the prosthetic leg. A year ago, this was a huge breakthrough in medical science since this involved a prosthetic limb that could be controlled via brain for the first time.<br /><br />The prosthetic limb used by Vawter was a collaborative effort of Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), a team of designers at Vanderbilt University and prosthetics company Freedom Innovations. This limb is till today, the most advanced amongst the prosthetics that are available in the market. The improvement is basically more freedom of movement that have been provided to the user and also includes rotating ankle which allows navigating sloped terrains. As with the original, all that the user is required to do is to think about the movement. Steven Reinecke, EVP of Research and Development at Freedom Innovations, says; ‘This is where prosthetic limbs will go. Right now people have a sophisticated support system. The goal is try to mirror the natural body as much as possible.’</div>

not mimic the original limb which they replace. However, the team at RIC has made sufficient progress in this context and has been working day and night since June 2005. The idea is to make use of nerves to let the brain control the prosthetic limb. As Dr. Levi Hargrove, one of the lead researchers at RIC, explains it; ‘This person has essentially been rewired.’ The impulses, neural in nature, are picked up by sensors and translated via computer to mimic the action that is being ordered by the brain.<br /><br />Vawter used this improved prosthetic limb in April 2013 and Dr. Hargrove recalls; ‘When we said to Zac; ‘You’re in control, you can do whatever you want!’ that was kind of a surreal moment. It was an overwhelming feeling for me—and I think for him as well that this has the potential to help a lot of people.’ Military has funded an $8 million grant for this project and the high amount reflects the interest which they have in this project.</div>
