Lenovo is one of the biggest names in the PC market these days, yet they probably aren’t one of the first names you think of when it comes to gaming PCs. It seems Lenovo has been looking to change that as of late, with the launch of dedicated gaming desktops and the announcement of a coming-soon 4K gaming laptop (that of course won’t game at native resolution).

In reality, they’ve had a number of systems suitable for gaming for quite a while in the form of their power-packed IdeaPad Y-series laptops. The Y-series has steadily evolved over time into a feature-packed performance machine that is really hard to beat for the buck.

The Y510p that is our best deal of the day was refreshed mid-2013 with the Haswell chips from Intel and came out swinging big against its competition. A quad-core Haswell i7 and 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 750M graphics are standard on all models, along with a minimum of 8GB of RAM and 1TB hard drive. Lenovo could have cut costs for an entry-level model with lower-end specs, leaving upgrade room for the users, but by giving all machines a great level of tech competency they also helped keep prices of these better-equipped models lower.

All the usual goodies like 802.11n WiFi and Bluetooth are included and stuffed into a sleek aluminum chassis that has smooth tapered edges for a slim look and feel. A red backlit keyboard is also standard on all models, leaving no doubt Lenovo wants to make its mark with an affordable, yet premium laptop.

Today’s model has all the aforementioned specs plus an upgrade to the 1080p screen and an added 24GB mSATA SSD cache. This is the perfect upgrade combo that gives you everything you need in a gaming laptop for only $899, marked down from $1,369. You could opt for a configuration that adds Blu-ray, but at an extra $150 cost you would need to watch a lot of Blu-rays.
